Kayaking NOVEMBER 26 2010 Okanagan Lake

From November 26 2010 KAYAKING

Water temp was +8c air temp of only -1c except for the wind it was a great day kayaking today. Paddled from the marina to the SS Sicamous and back.

Getting in the water without getting my sandals wet was a trick. With the ice on the rocky shoreline. I used ice cleats that strapped on my sandals quite securely giving me grip stepping of the iced rocks into my kayak. Had to leave my favourite hat in the car as it wouldn't have kept my ears warm. So balaclava it was. Tucked up just below my eyes so I could still see.
Paddling under the dock was quite interesting. The effects of the ice was cool. After returning to the marina getting out was a trick. Good thing I just saw a youtube clip of how it is done just the other day. Ended up having to take a run at the ice on the shore to skip my kayak up onto the shore. After 3 tries finally got up far enough on the ice that I didn't slide back into the water again.

Rattlesnake Island Sept4th 2010

8:30am Put-In at Indian Rock.

Paddling solo as no one showed. Nevertheless it was a great paddle to the island again. Had to make a short stop at a little beach to make sure GPS was set properly.

Squally point was a little ruff on the way but did manage to get a shot of the beacon on the point.

Arrived at RATTLESNAKE ISLAND
N49 44.882 W119 43.030 at 11:30am (under 3hrs by time I got into the water approx 8:45 I was figuring on 4hrs, good to over estimate) after pulling my kayak on shore at the Island I set up my camp stove and made myself a good strong french press coffee in my Starbucks french press mug then polished off 2 smokies. The weather was awesome sunny and warm today.

Sitting at Rattlesnake Is and blogging my trip so far. Few boats on the water today. Met up with another kayaker fly fishing just before Squally Point.

The only drawback is no cellphone service at Rattlesnake Is. So blogging can't be completed till I get within range of a cell tower. Keep in mind to carry extra batteries or have a solar charger for your cell because as soon as you leave cell range your phone will try everything to connect and will drain your power.

The paddle up was peaceful and relaxing for the most part until Squally. I am hoping my paddle back will be good on the other side of Squally. Right now it's looking quite unstable. Lots of waves rolling in.

The integrity of my dry-bag for my camp stove was somewhat compromised and needs to be replaced soon. Duct tape is only good for so long.

I am still the only one on the island and the odd passer by smiles and waves at me, friendly people here. Just saw the RCMP Zodiac passed by heading to some fishermen in Reluctant Dragon Cove.

I'm putting on my lifejacket now and sliding my kayak back into the water, there is now a headwind from the South picking up so time to begin my paddle back to Indian Rock. The time now is 12:45pm. Last swallow of my coffee and I am off!

Arrived at Commando Bay at 2:00pm

Three speed-boats on shore people relaxing on shore.

Temperature is 24c right now. I pulled my kayak up on one of the rock formations on the Southern portion of the bay. Listening to the slosh and trickle of the waves beside me. The rock beneath me is quite warm to relax on.

Time to dry out my clothes and bail out my kayak. Took on a bit of water from Rattlesnake Is to just North of Squally Point. Around Buchan Bay the waves calmed down from 1 1.5' -2' down to 6-10" waves. Cellphone re-connect communications with the cell towers around Squally but was too ruff to take photos or Tweet. Had to keep paddling non stop to keep control of the kayak.

My average speed has been 6.7kmh ETA is about 3:30 - 3:45pm

On the return trip stopped at a place I call Beach-Hideaway it's a nice little beach to pull the kayak up on and take a break. I have also enjoyed camping here a few times.

My son Tyson & GF Emily Kayaking on Okanagan Lake May24 2010

Tyson & Emily Kayaking on Okanagan Lake.

Just launched my son Tyson (16) and girlfriend, Emily they are going for a paddle in my kayak on the S/E side of Okanagan Lake and what awesome weather for it too.

Emily hasn't kayaked before so this is a new experience for her. Tyson has been out at least a few times a season for the last 4 years.

They are quite excited to get out and paddle together. They are equipped with safety gear and of course a cell phone and a camera (in a waterproof container). Hope all goes well and they have fun!

I cought up with them at the Walking Pear at halfway to the SS Sicamoose.

They had a great time paddling!

Kaleden to Okanagan Falls March 17 2010

+12c and Mainly sunny today while we (Robin and I) kayaked from Kaleden to Okanagan Falls.

Pioneer Park in Kaleden
Latitude: 49.385133° N
Longitude: 119.581250° W

Okanagan Falls
Latitude: 49.347733° N
Longitude: 119.579733° W

We put-in at Pioneer Park in Kaleden and paddled to the KVR rail bridge and back. Well I paddled there and back Robin jammed out in Okanagan Falls and waited for me to come back and get him LOL. It took us 1.75hrs to paddle there and took me just over 30 minutes to paddle back and get the car to pick up Robin in Okanagan Falls. Not to say Robin was slow at all but we paddled the shore from Kaleden to Okfalls and I paddled as a crow flies back. Shaving much time off.

Canoe Portage

Hi there, I am just posting about a cool canoe trip. It is located just outside of my hometown of Campbell River, on Vancouver Island B.C. It is called the Sayward Forest Canoe Route. Here is a map I have for it. There is plenty of info on the web for it. I just thought I would share for anyone who is interested. I have posted a picture of a lookout, that shows part of it in the background. Good day!!

Skaha Lake paddle Sept 14th 2009

Map: My Skaha Paddle GyPSii Info

Had to get some fresh air so I headed to Skaha Lake for a short paddle. Took a couple photos of the occasion. Sorry nothing spectacular today. Just a Seagull or do they call them Lakegalls when they are in the lake? LOL. It amazes me how many kayaks and canoes there are on the shores of the property owners there but you seldom see anyone using them. I think I counted about 30 of them. Maybe when gas prices go up too high they may retire the power boats and go green. Wouldn't that be nice!

Kentucky and Bluey Lakes in the Central Okanagan Valley BC Canada (N49 54.436 W120 33.900)

Kentucky Lake Trip photos August 29-30th 2009

N49 54.436 W120 33.900

My friend Robin and I headed off to Kentucky Lake and found the Provincial park. While searching for a BCFS camp we followed a road that appeared to go around the lake ended up taking us to Bluey Lake so we enjoyed the free camp night there. These lakes are fed from underground cold springs where you can find tufa rock and tufa deposits.

Three Mile Point - August 21, 2009

Location GPS coordinates: N49 32.540 W119 34.520
One thing I like about this spot is the seclusion, No walk in traffic, access by boat or a heck of a hike down from the hoodoos above. Today I paddled from Penticton to this spot and spend the day paddling back at around 3pm. Water was calm on the way out and by about noon the wind began to pickup. While I was about 300meters from the shore at the marina the waves were about 1.5' to 2' swells. Each wave almost rolling over the side of the kayak. Paddling hard while rolling with the waves, almost surfing. Nice that the wind and waves were mostly in my favor this time. To those wondering, Yes Three Mile Beach has a Clothing Optional beach. These coordinates and photos are from the Origional c/o part of the beach, at one time there was a trail in the claybank leading to the first part of the c/o beach (the most used part nowadays)

Hope you like the photos!

What a day! I towed a 30' pleasure craft with my kayak..LOL

Okanagan Lake N49 30.360 W119 35.237

Today I paddled to 3mile beach and back. After my 6 mile workout I saw a 30' pleasure craft stalled at the breakwater beacon about 200 meters from the marina. All the other power boats just passed on by and no one offered to help the three in the craft. As I approached I asked the people on the boat if they needed a tow. They all laughed at me saying "that would be funny, towed by a kayak". I said "well I could give it a try anyway". They continued to laugh at me as I connected the rope off the back of my kayak to the front of their craft. As I began paddling and the rope got tight the craft began to move. I heard them laughing and saying that would be funny to have a "kayak" tow us. Then I began paddling hard and I could hear someone in the boat say "holy crap!" and I heard the people on the floating swimmer's raft in the bay laughing and shouting "look at that!" pointing at me with the craft in tow. I continued to tow the 30' craft to the dock about 200 meters away. It was a heck of a work out but it was nice to get them to safety anyway. Sorry guys, I don't have any photos of the event only memories, here are some photos of my days paddling anyway. . Then after my workout I loaded my kayak up on the transport wheels and after a 30 minute break I rolled my kayak 2 blocks back home.

Hey guys, don't be afraid to help someone out even if you only have a kayak! =)
